My gripe isn't even about the model. It's that they took the care to turn around all the cartridges for whatever purpose (to not appear to advertise?) But didn't seem to care enough to make it look like it makes sense.

Sure people own and use multiple systems, but strewn around haphazardly and trying to look like they're playing? And really all i see is an entirely disinterested look. Whatever the purpose of this image was, it got lost in mash of random stuff.

Which is why people are up in arms. The content makes no sense and instead basically just shows a scantily clad female trying to cater (pander?) to an audience, and so it failed to me, to them.

To be honest, we shouldn't even be mad about this as gamers. You know why? Because it appears that we're the only ones coming here to rage and comment on this. Anyone who thinks this represents reality is gonna come here and see us screaming in the comments.

Pictures like this happen. Whatever. I trust that all the sensible, non-ignorant people viewing this know that yes, there are real girls & women who play real video games and probably don't look like this. I'm one of them. But I'm not really offended by these kinds of pictures, because... So what? Yeah, these pics can objectify/sexualize the subject. But the media takes literally everything else under the sun and does that with attractive models. So I don't see why the "it's not even plugged in, slut, etc." comments are necessary. Some Hollywood model would sexily lick or eye a cheeseburger on a burger commercial and no one would bat a freakin' eye when she's not even really eating it. Where are the people calling her a slut for not eating the cheeseburger? Yeah, she's getting paid. But the girls who post these pictures with controllers or whatever are posting them for a similar reason: to get likes or attention or something.

Why, then, do you have to spew fire at this? It's no different than any other picture like it. It's not hard to replace the gaming materials with something else, like stuffed animals, or clothes, or whatever.

This kind of raging over something so stupid makes us gamers look... Well, stupid.

I couldn't agree more with what you said. I know I get bit offended with sexualized women, but I get over it and move on because I know that's not reality. Sadly, others cannot do that for some reason without causing a dramatic scene. I'm glad there are sensible people still in the world so thanks for making this comment. =)

They are the 'nu-jocks' now that nerds are the in thing; trying to bash those who aren't part of their crowd. It's a sickening element of human behavior.

They are threatened and insecure.

Personally I think (as a guy) that yes this can be offensive, but really it's a matter of perspective. Hate being viewed as a sex object? look at it this way, if guys think you look like that when your not then that means media is a useful disguise. Also why not look like this? most guys wish they looked like the male equivalent of this girl.

Isn't offensive thats sexualize the "girl gamer". Its offensive when you try to play SNES with the console unplugged and with those N64/NES cardtrisge on the floor... THATS offensive to any gamer. Stop using games to give a "gamer look" on people

Did I say gamers have a specific look to them?  There's nothing wrong with the girl they choose for the pic - only how she's being portrayed.

wow... Being a girl that games more than a lot of guys I know, this.... this is just beyond stupid. Not only not plugged in, but you DO NOT LEAN ON THE CONSOLE! For fuck sake that is just stupid, also, no girl who games regularly sits like that with a "come hither" look. no. just no. Couch, comfy sweats, junk food, soda, and a roll of paper towels (so we don't get cheeto dust on the controler), oh, and the console is sat on a solid, even surface AND IS PLUGGED IN! STOP MAKING GIRLS WHO GAME LOOK LIKE TOTAL SLUTS

What's wrong with sluts? Anyone can appreciate video games, even sluts. What's wrong with looking pretty when playing video games? Why does she have you fit your ideal in order for this to be accurate? ... Why does it even have to be accurate?

Because this is how we female gamers are ALWAYS portrayed.  If it was was something new like "hot girls can be gamers too!" then sure.  But it's not.  This is how we're portrayed - just another sex object.  It's offensive to our subculture.

Because all these hipsters are the nu-jocks now that nerds are the in thing, and they have to bash the outsider to compensate for their own insecurity.

How dare a sexy girl appear in a fantasy portrayal. Its not like 90% of all the images in art are the same thing, just in different genres.

P.S objectification doesn't exist. It was a term first coined by an extremist feminist called Valerie Solenas, who was a sociopathic schizophrenic, who advocated killing 90% of men, and the destruction of all male culture, in her manifesto; and is most well known for trying to kill Andy Warhol and 3 other men.

Because they're taking a subculture they know little to nothing about, and don't even respect enough to do their damn research and using it as a "theme" for this picture, possibly in some hopes to pander to the gamer community, because of the stereotype that we're a bunch of lonely nerds? (Which many comments below, as I've pointed out, aren't helping.)

It's not even about the sexy girl for me. I like sexy women. (And guys sometimes)
It's about the utter lack of effort in the picture. No research done whatsoever. It's lazy.

All art is an imitation of reality or fantasy; rarely perfectly executed, and never deserving of the vehement comments seen here.

The tone of the comments reveal their true motives and biases; no matter the words they frame to try and justify it, after the fact.

Really? Are you TRYING to incite nerd rage?
I mean, the SNES isn't even plugged in, LOL. You could at least TRY, for fuck's sake.

Also, LOL all these spergs going "OMG I WISH GAMUR GURLS WERE REAL IM FOREVAR ALONE".
Like, have you looked around, or are you too antisocial to notice you're surrounded by female gamers? They're at least a good %30 of the people here, if not more.

I mean, 60% of our population is female, and 40% of gamers are women, so maybe it's not that you can't find any, maybe it's that they're staying away from you. For a reason. Check yourselves before you Shrek yourselves.

Ok for the NES, SNES, and N64 non-sense things. As a big fan, I feel a bit bad for the photograph.
But what is actually really not good enough for me, is the expression of the model. It just doesnt fit the scene. Something is very wrong with the mouth.

Actually, they're not as common as media leads us to believe. Stats say about 47% (or something) U.S. gamers are women (they did count those who downloaded apps on Google Play and App Store). Now, after meeting several "gamer girls" in my dorm, I'll name a few scenarios: didn't know what WoW was at all, thought that playing RUA on a Facebook account counted as hardcore gaming, and one who actually thought the NDS was made by Sony (she called it the Playstation DS), I get the impression that most of them either do it to identify with the new popularity of gaming culture or just because they feel they have to or for attention or something. I've only met 1 legit gamer girl (huge JRPG fan, Sony fangirl, but legit at least).
There are plenty of reasons why females are not as prominent in the subculture as men, mostly has to do with the tech industry's formation and the past social roles of women (opinion statement).
